Every entry door decision starts with how much sun, moisture, and temperature swing that opening actually sees, not a materials brochure. A south- or west-facing door in full sun bakes differently than a covered, north-facing entry, and that changes which material makes sense.

A door with no overhang takes direct rain on the threshold and sill every storm, which matters far more for wood than for fiberglass or steel. Coastal salt air accelerates corrosion on steel hardware and hinges faster than inland climates. Figure out your exposure before you fall in love with a material.

Fiberglass vs. steel vs. wood, what actually differs

Fiberglass is the default recommendation for most homes today: it won't rot, rust, warp, or dent easily, it can be finished to look like real wood grain, and its foam core gives it the best insulation of the three. It costs more upfront than steel but needs almost no maintenance.

Steel is the budget and security-focused choice: a solid steel skin over a foam core resists forced entry well and costs less installed, but it dents (and once dented, it's hard to repair invisibly) and can rust at the edges or around damaged spots over time, especially in humid or coastal climates.

Wood is the premium, natural-look option, real stiles-and-rails construction or veneer over an engineered core. It can be stained, refinished, and carved into detailed panel designs no other material matches, but it needs refinishing every few years and is the most vulnerable to swelling, cracking, and warping from moisture and sun.

Glass, sidelights, and transoms

Glass adds light and curb appeal but also adds cost and, if you're not careful, a security and privacy tradeoff. Decorative glass inserts range from simple frosted lites to full leaded-glass art pieces, and they're sold as swappable inserts on most modern door lines so you can change the look without replacing the whole door.

Sidelights and transoms (the narrow glass panels beside and above the door) add significant material and labor cost because they usually require reframing the rough opening, but they dramatically change how much light reaches an entryway or foyer.

  • Decorative glass insert (frosted, textured, or beveled): $150–$800 added to door cost
  • Full-view or half-view glass panel: $200–$600 added

Hardware tiers and what they actually buy you

Entry door hardware is graded by ANSI grade (1, 2, or 3), and that grade matters more than the finish. Grade 1 is commercial-grade durability rated for the highest cycle count and best resistance to forced entry; Grade 2 is a solid mid-tier residential standard; Grade 3 is builder-grade and the first thing that fails or gets replaced.

A multi-point locking system (locking at three points along the door edge instead of just the knob and deadbolt) adds real security and also pulls the door tighter into the frame, which improves the weatherseal, worth it on fiberglass and wood doors especially.

What the frame and sill can't fix

No door material fixes a rotted frame, an out-of-square rough opening, or a sill that's already letting water into the subfloor. If the existing jamb is soft, cracked, or visibly rotted, that has to be repaired or replaced before a new door goes in, regardless of which material you choose.

Is fiberglass really worth the extra cost over steel?+

For most climates, yes, if you plan to keep the door 10+ years. Fiberglass won't dent, rust, or need refinishing the way steel and wood can, and it insulates better than steel. Steel is the better call if budget and security-per-dollar matter more than long-term low maintenance.

Can I put a wood entry door in without regular maintenance?+

Not realistically. Even a factory-finished wood door needs refinishing every 2–4 years, sooner in full-sun or high-moisture exposures, or the finish will crack and let moisture into the wood. If you want the wood look with minimal upkeep, a fiberglass door with a wood-grain finish is the closer alternative.

How much does it cost to add sidelights to my entry?+

Adding a single sidelight to an opening that doesn't already have one typically runs $600-$1,800 including the reframing work, since the rough opening has to be widened and re-flashed. If the opening already has sidelight framing, it's closer to the low end.
